The perforation of a movie sequence from That Uncertain Feeling
by Ernst Lubitsch has been irreparably damaged,
and the 56 individual pictures are now projected,
side by side and turned 45°, onto a wall by slide projectors.
The intriguingly oblique subtitle
Ich beginne, den Mann darin zu sehen (I am beginning to see the man in this)
refers to a painting seen on the wall –
addressing and acknowledging the first glimmer of a perception,
it is simultaneously ‘arrested’ through the fixed projection of the once ‘moving’ image.
