First Lesson

Installation on the wall

17 spinning fluorescent signs, so-called „sign bowls”, a familiar element of the Daegu cityscape where they are predominantly used by hairdressers to advertise their business have been stripped of their colourful allure and equipped with Korean characters. The full sentence reads „The girl is talking about nothing in particular”.
In several respects this is a „first lesson” to the artist: First of all like the girl in the sentence she has neither the ambition nor the inclination to „say” anything, let alone anything out of the ordinary; moreover it is literally her first sentence, culled from a manual on the Korean language, the first calligraphic exercise in Hangeul – in which she is not proficient either intellectually or emotionally – which she has actually written with her own hand.

With special thanks to the photographer Hawn-Woo No, Dae-Young Kang and Dong-Hun Lee for their help during shooting and for translating;
and to Antje Spohr, Jung-Hyang Oh, Dae-Young Kang and Robert Bruemmerhoff whose sounds from the show you can hear on the soundtrack of this video.
